Album Info:Electric MU trains on the Long Island. This is mostly M 1's and M 3's-the M 3's were still new when I moved away from NY City in 1988-and some M 7's. I was not taking photos in the MP 54 era. I was 13 when the last of the old electric cars were retired. So it goes.

Old and new
Title:  Old and new
Description:  A couple of MP 54 museum cars had been painted by a group on the Island, and they had prevailed on the LIRR to store them. For a time in 1977, they were at Port Washington, pushed back into one of the storage tracks there. Since the LIRR needed all the capacity they had there, the regular cars were put into the same track, giving us this odd juxtaposition. It was not the first time I had seen such a combination, though. In the early years of the M 1s, there were frequent failures, and it was not unheard of for a train of MP 54s or MP 72s to be coupled to a disabled train of M 1s to push them to destination.

Under the signals
Title:  Under the signals
Description:  One of my favorite places to watch the LIRR action was Queens Village. It was easy to get to, usually there was parking, and it was busy. The added attraction was the row of PRR style position light signals at the east end of the station. Watching the lights change as trains knocked them down and they were cleared was endlessly fascinating. An eastbound Huntington train rolls under the signals, about to cross over from track 3 to track 2 as it makes its way through Queens interlocking, just to the east. The tower is visible at far left, beyond the signal bridge. Note the clear signal on track 4; a Hempstead train is imminent.

Metro North test train
Title:  Metro North test train
Description:  The Port Washington Branch had a test facility at Shea Stadium, where there were a number of unused tracks that had been built for the 1964/65 Worlds Fair. Off line trains were somtimes seen, usually new equipment being tested, but occasionally NYCTA cars too, since the voltages were similar, and they shared an over running third rail. I recall seeing R42 cars going past my house in Little Neck. Here we see some Metro North cars waiting to go east on a test.

Odd station stop
Title:  Odd station stop
Description:  An eastbound Hempstead train make its station stop at Hollis during track maintenance. The normal route for Hempstead trains is to use track 4, the platform track. When the track was out of service, a temporary ramp to track 2 would be set up so trains could still service the stations from the inside track.

MUs on the Oyster Bay Branch
Title:  MUs on the Oyster Bay Branch
Description:  Third rail extended to East Williston on the Oyster Bay Branch, but only one train a day took advantage of the electrification. It was train 1501, which deadheaded to East Williston, then turned to run back toward New York at 0730. Here it is making its crossover move to the westbound side and entering the station to make its pick up. The train had the distinction of being the only Main Line train to stop at Floral Park.

Title:  Port Washington westbound
Description:  A westbound train on the Port Washington Branch passes the pocket track and enters Great Neck station. The siding east of the station there is used to turn short runs that return to Penn Station there. Title:  New equipment
Description:  Well, the cars are not new, but the fact that MU trains are now coming to Ronkonkoma is the best news for Suffolk county commuters since the Port Jeff branch was electrified to Huntington in 1970. This allows riders on the Main Line to avoid the infamous change at Jamaica. This westbound is about to accommodate that wish, ready to depart the new station.

Busy day
Title:  Busy day
Description:  Great Neck was always a busy place at train time. The double track on the Port Washington Branch ended here, so trains often met at the station. The schedule had them meeting at the next station west, Little Neck, but things being what they are, meets here were common. The idea was that the westbound would clear, allowing the eastbound to move on with no delay. Its not always a perfect world, and this pair didnt quite meet as intended. The eastbound train, on the right, is just now pulling out, having got his signal, while the westbound makes his stop.
