Title:  N&W #300 ROANOKE
Description:  Built in 1917 by Pullman as N&W business car #300, and modernized in 1955. The 1985 NS passenger car diagram folio shows that the #300 was renumbered to NS #5 (1st), however, this photo from 1987 shows that this was either not applied, or the car was changed back to N&W #300 after being sold to private ownership. Under private ownership, the #300 was later repainted dark blue and renamed OCEAN. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a Kodachrome original 35mm slide.

One of the last three cars that were built by Budd, along with Viewliner prototype sleepers #2300 and #2301. Stored at Beech Grove from 2002 until being pulled from storage in circa 2009 for refurbishing/remodeling (new interior module designs in preparation for the Viewliner II order), now in service as of 2011 as the INDIANAPOLIS. The MONTE BALDO was retained by Pullman after the 12/31/1948 divestiture until sold to the Circus World Museum in February 1965. THE BARABOO is 1 of 5 cars from this Lot which are known to be extant: CAPITOL ROAD (ex-MONTE VISO) was sold to C&NW, rebuilt to business car #400 (1st), later #401 (2nd) WYOMING, and is currently privately owned as the CAROLYN; MONTE CRISTO was sold to CGW, rebuilt to business car #100, later sold to KCS as #99 TOLMAK, and is now #99 NEW ORLEANS; MONTE LEONE was sold to SP, rebuilt to business car #110 LOS ANGELES, sold to Ferrocarril del Pacifico, and is currently privately owned; MONTE ROSA was sold to CofG, modified to an instruction car and renamed PROGRESS, later sold to Church Street Station in Orlando, and is now at the Florida RR Museum in Parrish. Description:  Built in 1947 by Budd in Lot #9613-004 as NYC 56 seat chair #2953, 1 of 60 such cars (#2900-#2959) built in that Lot, which was ordered in March 1944; cars were delivered between October 1946 and March 1947. In 1973-1974 and 1976, 52 of these cars were sold to Amtrak as #5630-#5635 and #5640-#5685; the #2953 was sold in 1973 as #5685. Many of these cars were retired and stored, either in 1981 or 1983, including 9 cars which were selected for conversion to HEP (not including the #5685), but after Amfleet II deliveries began, these plans were cancelled and a number of the cars were sold in 1988. I have no records pertaining to when the #5685 was sold, just that it, and several other cars, were retired in October 1983. Scanned with an Epson V550 from an original 35mm slide, brand is unknown. Description:  Amtrak 10 roomette-6 double bedroom (10RM-6DB) sleeper #2438 PACIFIC CASTLE in the consist of westbound train #41, the BROADWAY LIMITED, in Harrisburg. Built by Budd in January 1950 in Lot #9660-039 to Pullman Plan #9522 as UP PACIFIC CASTLE, 1 of 50 PACIFIC-series cars built in that Lot, which was ordered in February 1948; cars were delivered between December 1949 and June 1950. Besides PACIFIC EMPIRE, which was wrecked in 1951, the other 49 cars were assigned #14xx-series numbers in 1969, the PACIFIC CASTLE was assigned #1407, which was not applied. 5 cars were sold to the Milwaukee Road in 1969, 1 car was retained by UP, and the other 43 cars were sold to Amtrak in 1971 as #2600-#2642, PACIFIC CASTLE as #2605. Besides 3 which were wrecked during Amtrak's first decade, the remaining 40 cars were converted to head end power (HEP) in 3 batches, the 3rd group of 12 cars were converted in 1980-1981 (with 1 roomette combined with the porter's room as an ADA room), including PACIFIC CASTLE, which was converted to HEP #2438 in September 1980. Reconfigured in October 1942 to café observation #1564, rebuilt in April 1945 to business car #124, renumbered in June 1952 to UP/LA&SL #104 (2nd), renumbered again in April 1957 to UP/LA&SL #105, and renumbered a third time in September 1965 back to UP/LA&SL #124. Retired in June 1970 and sold in 1971, later owned by Bob Spaugh as the MICHAEL L. SPAUGH, resold in 1980 to a private owner as the LEIGHA MARIE, resold again in 1986 to another private owner, still as the LEIGHA MARIE, later had #800186 assigned/applied.
