BM 4-6-2 #3710 - Boston & Maine
Title:  BM 4-6-2 #3710 - Boston & Maine
Description:  BM 3710 was one of the last ten 4-6-2 locomotives that Lima would ever make for any railroad. To mark the delivery of these 10, Boston & Maine sponsored a naming contest among New England K-8 students. The winning name for this first loco was "Peter Cooper" seen as a plate on the side. The loco is posing at the North Station in Boston on this sunny April day in 1938. It had 80" drivers and developed 260 psi boiler pressure. F. H. Donahue photo

BM 4-6-2 #3710
Title:  BM 4-6-2 #3710
Description:  Much like its Alco-Schenectady sisters, this 4-6-0 Pacific instead was built by Lima in Decemeber of 1934 and was also a solid performer on the B&M roster. Interesting note from www.steamlocomotives.com "When the Boston and Maine took delivery of its second order of Lima Pacifics in 1937 [these would be the last 4-6-2s Lima would build for anybody], it sponsored a contest among New England schoolchildren to name those ten engines and ten other passenger engines. The contest was open to any pupil in any community along the railroad and included students from kindergarten to the final year of junior high school. to the locomotive a plate with the name of the boy or girl who suggested the name, as well as the name of his or her school. The contest elicited more than 10,000 names for the 20 engines." The name chosen for this loco was "Peter Cooper" The loco was scrapped in September of 1953. Specs - 80" drivers, impressive 260 psi boiler pressure, 23x28" cylinders, engine wt of 339,200 lb and tractive effort w/booster 52,800 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo.

BOSTON & MAINE - LAST STEAM RUN FROM PORTLAND
Title:  BOSTON & MAINE - LAST STEAM RUN FROM PORTLAND
Description:  B&M P-4b 4-6-2 3713 is backing the excursion train which just arrived in the late afternoon from Portland to the coach yard outside North Station, Boston. Some commuter trains would be steam powered for a few months. The relatively new highways obscure the station building.

SUNSET ON BOSTON & MAINE STEAM
Title:  SUNSET ON BOSTON & MAINE STEAM
Description:  B&M P-4-a 4-6-2 3713 has returned to the East Somerville engine terminal (Boston) and is being serviced after taking an excursion train to Portland. This may be the last photo of 3713 in steam. I shot her with available light. Built by Lima in 1934, the Pacific is being restored at Steamtown. Steam continued to power commuter trains for a few more months but 3713 pulled the last long distance steam train and was not suitable for the commuter trains. She lasted this long mainly because she was equipped to operate with a snow conveyor/melter. Note that only half the coal tower shows in the photo - it serviced six tracks.

BM 3713
Title:  BM 3713
Description:  Steamtown's Boston & Maine Pacific still undergoing restoration inside the restoration shop. A 1934 product of the Lima Locomotive Works, the 3713 was one of the locomotives part of a contest that the B&M held for schoolchildren living along their railroad to name the engines. This locomotive was given the name "Constitution", which lasted through most of its service life. Retired in the 1950s, it would be sold to F. Nelson Blount through the Edaville Railroad as one of the first locomotives that would make up the Steamtown collection. It is currently one of two 4-6-2 type engines from New England under restoration to active service, the other MEC 470 at Ellsworth, ME.

BM 4-6-2 #3715 - Boston & Maine
Title:  BM 4-6-2 #3715 - Boston & Maine
Description:  This is one of the only 10 4-6-2 Pacifics built by Lima for the Boston & Maine. In addition, these last 10 Lima Pacifics were the last Pacifics that Lima would ever build. To commemorate these last 10, B&M held a children's naming contest. The winning name for #3715 was "Kwasind" from the "Song of Hiawatha". All the rest of the Boston & Maine's large stable of 4-6-2 Pacifics were built by Alco, nearly all of those were Schenectady locos with the exception of the DLW Brooks built locos that were purchased in 1943. Specs - serial #7655, P-4 class, 80" drivers, impressive 260 psi boiler pressure, 23x28" cylinders. No exact date, location or photographer was listed for this photo but it appears to be Boston, MA.

BM 4-6-23716
Title:  BM 4-6-23716
Description:  This good looking 4-6-2 Pacific type loco was built by Lima in December of 1934. The contest elicited more than 10,000 names for the 20 engines." The name chosen for this loco was "Roger's Rangers" - note the nameboard on side. The loco was scrapped in September of 1953. Specs - 80" drivers, impressive 260 psi boiler pressure, 23x28" cylinders, engine wt of 339,200 lb and tractive effort w/booster 52,800 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo but it appears to be Boston Nosth Station.
