Description:  iCurve. Here is the second of two successive images by John Pickett that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 13 October 1955. Prominent here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8503, #8502, and two "EP" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #8503 and #8502 are ES-15M's built in August of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each; they're helping to pull a mail and express train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." Note PRR J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" #6154 running backward on Track #2!

Date is approximate but with Warren Evans help, the date must be after 1966 when PRR used large numbers on the cabs. Description:  Rainy. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 12 October 1965. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8570, #8578, and #8577. All are ES-15M's built by EMD in September of 1953 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. They've come down the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with an 84-car mineral train and are passing ALTO Tower on their way to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. The cabin car is #477540. Description:  MDiv. Here is the third of four successive duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by John Dziobko, Jr., that were taken near Lewistown, Pennsylvania, on 31 December 1956. Visible in the distance is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6967, an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during December of 1926 and retired in June of 1959. It's gaining speed with a westbound mixed-cargo freight train which has just been relived of a disabled wooden reefer. Shown here are the Locomotive Ready Tracks below the 17th Street Bridge; many makes and models are represented. Of the 35 or so locomotives visible, the following are identifiable by number. Starting from the bottom are PRR engines #8807, #8967, #8574, and #6307. #8807 is an FS-16M built by Fairbanks-Morse in 1952 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. #8967 is a BS-16M built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. #8574 is an ES-15M built by EMD in 1953 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #6307 is an AF-27 built by the American Locomotive Company in 1965 and rated ate 2,700 horsepower. Visible in the distance is a portion of the 8th Street Bridge.

Shown here are eight freight trains parked in the Altoona Yards, all awaiting crews so that they can begin climbing the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible on the left are several passenger cars awaiting reconditioning in the PRR's Passenger Car Shops behind them. Visible near the center (L to R) are PRR engines #7210 and #7196-B. Both are EFS-17M's built by EMD in 1957 and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. Visible at the far right is PRR engine #8575, an ES-15M built by EMD in 1953 rated at 1,500 horsepower.
