The train would have been hidden behind the historic Pierce Manufacturing plant that occupied this city block from 1917 until it was razed in 2011. This plot of land has been divided into lots for Habitat for Humanity and some homes have sprung up to partially obscure the view. |

I believe the facility partially visible at right used to be part of the large GripTite nail factory, but I am not certain (I remember, years ago, seeing a sign for a familiar brand of nails). I haven't learned when they moved out or changed names. The facility has been sub-divided and currently houses multiple businesses, including this portion used by Honey Bee Ware. The facility does not presently benefit from rail service, but it used to. |

The pulpwood cars are owned by Marion Plywood Corp. (est. 1894) and when loaded cars arrive, the logs are trans-loaded to trucks for the 24-mile trip to Marion, WI. Marion had rail service, courtesy of C&NW, from 1879 to 1982. The reporting mark is based on Great Lakes Veneer, Inc., a subsidiary of Marion Plywood Corp. and co-located at its Marion, WI facility. The GB&W depot once stood here, along the east (right) side of the north end of Avon St. It was later moved two blocks east to the N. Shawano St. grade crossing. It was later moved to a nearby business. |

Founded in 1889 (some references state 1892) as the Combined Locks Paper Co., it became Combined Paper Mills, Inc. in ‘46 after it purchased a paper mill in PA. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. in ‘69, it was merged with Appleton Coated Paper Co. in ‘71 to form Appleton Papers, Inc. Commonly known as Appleton Papers Locks Mill, it has been controlled by several different domestic and foreign owners over the years. It was separated from Appleton Papers in ‘00 and became Appleton Coated, LLC. Some of the rails were pulled up from this small yard in '13. All that remains is a runaround to access a pair of spurs for this side of the mill (out-of-frame to left) and a spur for the warehouse at right (that spur does not appear to be used much, if at all, currently). |

A CN local approaches Hwy. M as it heads northwest with 44 cars via former SOO rails at Medina Station, Town of Dale, Outagamie Co., WI on 6 Nov. '18. Train was headed for Waupaca and had two locomotives, IC 9565 and IC 3138. The WC built a depot here (on the opposite side of Hwy. M) somewhere between 1871, when the line was laid, and 1889, when I found it depicted on a map in Plat Book of Outagamie County…, 1889. The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915. |

Train has just set out a string of cars at the yard at Appleton Junction and is now bound for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I recently discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. |

An interesting, and unusual, CN local (returning from Waupaca) slows to halt short of N. Lake St. while headed southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 16 Nov. '18. I have a strong interest in railroad operations, but I am, admittedly, not well-versed in the specifics of their methods. This is one of those incidents which I find interesting, but it leaves me scratching my head. A crewmember, holding a fusee, is preparing to dismount to flag the crossing, even though the signals, bell, and gates were functioning. |

An interesting, unusual CN local crosses N. Lake St. while headed southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 16 Nov. '18. I have a strong interest in railroad operations, but I am, admittedly, not well-versed in the specifics of their methods. This is one of those incidents which I find interesting, but it leaves me scratching my head. The local paused short of N. Lake St., a crewmember with a fusee dismounted and flagged the crossing, even though the signals, bell, and gates were functioning. The crewmember snubbed out the fusee on the pavement and is preparing to remount. Train was returning from Waupaca with over a dozen cars. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. on 20 Apr. ’22. Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. |

A CN local momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. while setting out cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 29 Nov. '18. After finishing up here, the local will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. A few blocks away, another local waits to enter the yard after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. Silly me, I thought that current law prohibits any of us from attempting to “drive any vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a railroad crossing while such gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed.” Evidently, this truck driver feels that the law does not apply to him. The near side gate is just out-of-frame to the right; you need to zoom in to see the far side gate partially visible between the locomotive and the truck. |
