Album Info:The Viroqua branch ran from Sparta, WI to Viroqua, WI. Typically, a crew was based at La Crosse, ran to Sparta and switched local customers, then headed down the branch. At Viroqua, the crew would tie up and return to La Crosse the next day. Fertilizer and other agricultural products were the main commodities on the Viroqua branch. The line was laid with very light rail...60-72 lb on the "mainline" and 56 lb on the sidings. The State of Wisconsin purchased the Viroqua branch and contracted the Chicago Madison & Northern to operate it. But in the end, the bad track and the State & counties failure to fund rehabilitation doomed the branch and it was torn up in 1982.
