Title:  AMTK E8 439
Description:  Amtrak E8 439 without a pilot and an unidentified E unit with icicle breakers at about 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to the book, Amtrak By The Numbers, number 439 was built in February 1952 (c/n 15712) as RF&P E8 1007, became AMTK 216, was rebuilt in April 1974 to E8A-R 439 and officially retired in July 1981, although it looks retired here. The locomotives were parked on leads to Dearborn Street Station, closed in 1971. Santa Fe's Super Chief and other passenger trains once used these rails. The rails rising in the background were the IC (ICG on this photo date) rails ascending to meet the ICG's Saint Charles Air Line on the bridge in the background. I don't know the purpose of the tower building seen on the right.

Amtrak FL9 488
Title:  Amtrak FL9 488
Description:  Amtrak FL9 488 in New York City, New York sometime during June 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I don't know exactly where in NYC this photo was taken (see Comment below, thanks Josh). I happened upon this train while wandering around in Grand Central Station. I really wanted a photo in daylight, so I grabbed a cab and attempted to explain my goals to the driver, who was convinced I was crazy, but this was the Big Apple, where crazy is acceptable. I got out at a station somewhere and ran up to the platform, managing to catch the train running under straight electric power off the third rail.

According to the September 1983 issue of Trains Magazine, Amtrak FL9 488 was previously numbered Amtrak 239. It was originally New York New Haven & Hartford (NYNH&H, or simply the New Haven) 2016 (c/n 21962), built between July-November 1957, later under Penn-Central ownership (the NH was added to the PC organization on January 1, 1969), it was renumbered 5016. It had 1750 horsepower produced by a 16-567C prime mover, and the idea was to shut the diesel down at Woodlawn Junction and run under third rail 600 volts DC power into Grand Central. Under the PC ownership however, the diesels were kept fired up until the entrance to Park Avenue Tunnel at 96th Street in Manhattan, but only if the crew knew they had a good unit. Sometimes, deteriorating batteries would prevent restarting the diesel once it had been shut down, but more often the problem was the electrically operated air compressor had become defective, and the main generator, run by the diesel, was necessary to keep the brake system charged. So, despite regulations to the contrary, the echoes of rumbling 567's became familiar sounds in the catacombs of Grand Central, with resulting limited visibility in the tunnels during morning and evening rush hours. Penn-Central's assets were conveyed to Conrail on April 1, 1976, and CR sold 12 FL9's to Amtrak. During 1978-80, Amtrak sent six of its FL9's to Morrison-Knudsen in Boise, Idaho for rebuilding, including the capability to provide Head End Power (HEP) to Amtrak's new and rebuilt cars. The FL9's returned with air horns replacing their New Haven Hancock air whistles. The US Congress mandated that Conrail exit the passenger business on January 1, 1983, so the remainder of CR's FL9's were sold off to commuter agencies.

Amtrak SDP40F 502
Title:  Amtrak SDP40F 502
Description:  Amtrak SDP40F 502 at about 22nd Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This location was known as Alton Junction or Fort Wayne Junction, depending on which railroad you worked for. The track was in the process of being rebuilt, note the second track to the far right is still incomplete. At the time of this photo, that would only be a problem for the ICG. I think Tim told me that the blue rail joiners marked a future weld point.

Title:  Amtrak SDP40F 508
Description:  Amtrak SDP40F 508 at about 22nd Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There's a SW1 at the other end. This is a switching move across either Alton Junction or Fort Wayne Junction (depending on who you talked to) and the track has recently been rebuilt. Think they used enough rail joiners? See Comment below, thanks Tim.

Title:  AMTK SDP40F 508
Description:  Amtrak SDP40F 508 facing inbound at Alton Junction (about 22nd Street) in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I might speculate that this was a move to turn the locomotives around. If so, the next step was to move through Union Interlocking Wye and return to this location with the cabs facing outbound.

Amtrak SDP40F 509
Title:  Amtrak SDP40F 509
Description:  Amtrak SDP40F 509 waiting for clearance at 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The only E-units I can identify are 444 (in the middle) and 421 (on the right), could not identify the rear-facing E. Number 509 was built June 1973 (c/n 72694-10) and was traded back to EMD for parts use in the construction of F40PH 372. It has skid-mounted steam generators, rumored (but never fully substantiated, track maintenance was also suspect) to have been part of the derailment fault of these particular locomotives. The steam generators themselves were not at fault, but the location of the tanks that supplied the water may have played a role. It was suggested that the location of the tanks inside the rear of the locomotive against the outer walls was a problem when entering a curve at high speed. The water tended to go straight, pulling the rear of the locomotive out of the curve and against the outer rail. This in turn was transmitted to the following car, generally a lightly loaded baggage car, which then derailed. Earlier conclusions focused on the hollow bolster truck, but freight locomotives had used the same truck design without problem. The problem may have disappeared by itself had Amtrak removed the steam generators and replaced them with HEP power plants, as had been the plan from the beginning, but instead most of the SDP40F's were traded back to EMD and scrapped, with components used in the construction of the F40PH's. The bridge in the background is the ICG's Saint Charles Air Line.

For these locomotives to be of any use to Amtrak in the near future, they will have to be turned, and the quickest way at this location would be to wye them through Union Avenue Interlocking, so we are probably looking at a typical 'hurry up and wait' situation until traffic clears.

Title:  Amtrak SDP40F 511
Description:  Amtrak SDP40F 511 at about 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1973 (c/n 72694-12) it was retired around 1984 and traded to the AT&SF (a total of 18 SDP40F's were traded for 43 Santa Fe SSB1200's and CF7's). This unit was rebuilt during April 1985 into ATSF SDF40-2 5251, later BNSF 6961. The SDF40-2's were retired by the BNSF in 2002 and stripped for parts.
