PNC SD18m 1802
Precision National SD18m 1802 on the BN at Clyde, Illinois, April 1980, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1802 was built in October 1959 as Southern SD24 2504 (c/n 15600) on EMD Order 5606. It was renumbered by the Southern to 6302. During 1978 PNC acquired this locomotive and several other SD24's from the Southern and put them in a lease pool, most being leased to the BN. During 1979, PNC's SD24's were rebuilt to SD18m's by removing the turbocharger and de-activating the dynamic brakes. The first five were rebuilt by the Milwaukee Road, the rest were rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen. The rebuilt locomotives were renumbered into the 1800 series (their new horsepower rating), and retained the last two digits of it's last Southern road number. Number 1802 was leased to the BN for about a year, then went on to become C&NW 6624.
