SAR Class 5M Motor Coach (Type 3 R) Editors Pick! Contributor's Pick!
Metrorail commuter trains are usually made up of as many as 11 to 13 wagons, of which three are motor coaches, one at each end and the third in the middle of the train. The type 3 coaches appeared on the scene when the use of train conductors as ticket examiners was discontinued. They have one set of sliding doors, with five windows between the motor compartment and the door set.

This picture shows Darwin Award candidates on the Kaalfontein to Tembisa run. Trainsurfing has become an often fatal fad around Johannesburg and the ultimate macho thing is to ride on the roof, standing upright while dodging catenary poles and keeping clear of the 3,000 volt cable while the train speeds along at between 80 and 100 km/h. Note the surfer in dark green between the second and third last coaches, whose feet are mere inches from the ballast, even with his knees pulled up. SAR Class 5M2A, Horsepower 1216, Length over headstocks 60' 3 5/8" (18.380m) or later models 60' 10 7/8" (18.564m), Height 12'0" (3.660m), Width 9'3" (2.820m).

Tyler Trahan General I'm still wondering how the engineer sees out the cab window with all those people on the front... Simply unbeliveable... 1/27/2009 11:00:52 AM
Col André Kritzinger General This was the rear end. The very next train did have three surfers clinging on to the front, but by then the light was too far gone for a good picture. 2/4/2009 12:57:57 PM

Jim Dodds General Hey Tyler - It was taken on the back, not the front, I think. Anyway, it's sad how poor so many people and countries are in Africa. Starving children that go as far as eating dirt to try to fulfill their apetites... ;( 8/19/2009 7:34:02 PM
Curt Beal General Maybe in Africa this sort of thing is just commonplace. There may not be the high security that there is in America. 1/12/2010 3:16:39 PM
Zach Pumphery General Maybe if they don't want to starve to death they can hop the next floating car to America and we taxpayers can buy them a home, a car, food, and give them free healthcare like all the other useless f*cking ingrates currently crossing (illegally) into our country. 1/26/2010 3:39:00 PM
