Even though the summer weekender and vacation season officially ends on Labor Day, many rider still take advantage of the parlor cars til late October. Description:  The MP 15 trailing this eastbound Port Jefferson train was not unusual. The GP 38 was. Must have been a power swap, and the GP was tacked on before the train left Jamaica. Interestingly, the two trailing units are the highest numbered in their respective classes. The 277 is named for LIRR president Walter Schlager.

Title:  Lone outpost
Description:  The Main Line has some stations that seemed to be neither here nor there, and not well patronized. One such was Republic, which was once the site of a large aircraft plant. It was adjacent to NY 110, the main drag running across the Island from Huntington to Amityville, and a busy place by the 1980s, with many businesses and employers along its length, especially in the area around Melville. Yet, the LIRR handled relatively few passengers here, perhaps due to the dearth of train service in the diesel era, and a lack of good connecting public transportation. This evening rush train to Ronkonkoma is making its stop here, only a few will get off.

Description:  A Ronkonkoma train, one of only a few to make the Republic stop, slows for the platform during the evening rush. Evidence of the upcoming electrification is apparent. The third rail is already in place, but will not be energized for another year or so, and the structure for the signals at an interlocking yet to be built is overhead, awaiting the new position lights. The old signal is showing a stop in the distance.

Title:  N&W #300 ROANOKE
Description:  Built in 1917 by Pullman as N&W business car #300, and modernized in 1955. The 1985 NS passenger car diagram folio shows that the #300 was renumbered to NS #5 (1st), however, this photo from 1987 shows that this was either not applied, or the car was changed back to N&W #300 after being sold to private ownership. Under private ownership, the #300 was later repainted dark blue and renamed OCEAN. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a Kodachrome original 35mm slide.
